A Romantic Summer Vineyard Wedding in Comox Valley; 40 Knots Winery Wedding
Brittany and Ryan’s 40 Knots Winery wedding was bathed in golden sunshine from morning until night. The vibrant leafy greens of the grapevines were dazzling, while the cozy atmosphere of the Vineyard Terrace reception space created a most romantic and elegant wedding celebration. Brittany and Ryan are both employed with the military, and came to know the Comox Valley while stationed on Vancouver Island. After becoming engaged here, they knew they wanted to share this meaningful chapter of their lives with their families by hosting their wedding in the area. 40 Knots Winery’s 24 acre venue struck them as the perfect, serene setting for their wedding!
40 Knots Winery’s Unique Reception Space
One of the most striking features of 40 Knots Winery is its unique 360-degree T-shaped reception space; Vineyard Terrace. Surrounded by clear glass walls on all sides, it allows guests to feel fully immersed in the vineyard while remaining comfortably sheltered, no matter the weather. I can easily imagine how stunning a winter wedding would be here, with the cozy fireplace and warm ambient lighting creating an intimate atmosphere. For Brittany and Ryan’s mid-August wedding day, however, the setting was filled with clear blue skies, brilliant sunshine, and that hot summer heat.
While guests were protected from the sun, the space remained filled with natural light throughout the day. Golden hour here is unlike anywhere I’ve experienced as a wedding photographer. As the sun begins to set, light pours into the glass-walled reception space, wrapping the celebration in a most breathtaking golden glow. Brittany and Ryan’s first dance took place during this time, and what was already a heartwarming moment was made even more dazzling with the special light.
Why I Love Photographing Weddings at 40 Knots Winery
At the time of writing this post, I’ve been a wedding photographer for 11 years and have had the joy of capturing 184 unique love stories. Over that time, I’ve seen countless venues, and I can say with absolute excitement—I LOVE 40 Knots Winery weddings! Photographically, this venue is top-notch. The glass-walled reception space fills with natural light throughout the day while still providing shade and comfort for guests. The vineyards themselves are simple and straightforward, with rows upon rows of grapevines. But don’t let that simplicity fool you—there’s plenty of diversity and playful angles to explore, making every shoot feel fresh and unique while keeping the focus on the couple. While 40 Knots offers plenty of beautiful spots for formal photos on-site, its close proximity to the ocean also makes it easy to venture to a nearby beach for additional shots.
The on-site wedding day coordinator is a massive perk. Jenn was our girl that day, and she made sure the event ran smoothly. She gave me a ton of helpful information ahead of time, and was communicative with me as the photographer, discussing the option for having the glass doors closed or open. When guests were starting to ask about wine, her and her team immediately started pouring ;) Having a built-in coordinator like her is always such a wonderful bonus for both couples and vendors alike.
Lastly, I always love a venue that naturally provides entertainment and a memorable experience for guests. At 40 Knots, the vineyard itself offers plenty to enjoy—guests were able to wander among the rows of grapevines, take in the stunning views, and, of course, savor incredible wine throughout the day. It’s the kind of setting that keeps everyone engaged, relaxed, and smiling from start to finish.
