A Laid-Back Love Story at Tigh-Na-Mara | Documentary Wedding Photography in Parksville
Kylie and Alex’s wedding at Tigh-Na-Mara Resort is a beautiful example of what documentary wedding photography can look like. In just two hours of coverage, I delivered 750 images — simply because the day was overflowing with candid moments worth preserving.
I began photographing about 15 minutes before the ceremony, capturing guests as they arrived and the quiet anticipation before Kylie walked down the aisle. Alex was already there, standing at the oceanfront gazebo with his closest friends, gazing out at the water. Nearby, his nephews darted around in their tiny suits while their mom did her best to keep their pants spotless. It’s moments like these that draw me most to documentary wedding photography.
Alex watched the boys with an amused, knowing expression — fully aware that dirt-stained pants were inevitable. We exchanged a quick glance, and I knew those fleeting, unfiltered moments needed to be captured. Boys being boys. An uncle quietly soaking it all in. The kind of memory no one plans for, but everyone cherishes later.
Twinning Ceremony Tears and More!
As Kylie reached Alex at the ceremony spot, they both lifted their hands to wipe away tears at the exact same moment. It was fleeting — the kind of blink-and-you-miss-it exchange — and I was so grateful to have captured it. That’s the magic of documentary wedding photography: not just anticipating the big, obvious moments, but continuously shooting through the in-between ones, where the real emotion often lives.
They shared personally written vows, and once again, they were perfectly in sync. Both spoke about their first date, their shared love of music, and the comfort they feel in each other’s presence. If they were stranded on a deserted island and could only bring one CD, they wouldn’t even have to debate the choice. Of course they’d agree.

“My husband & I were married on September 8th in Parksville. While we were still in the process of looking through portfolios of photographers in the area, we noticed that Deanna’s stood out to us. It just so happened, that our wedding venue (Tigh-Na-Mara), recommended Deanna as well, which made hiring her a no-brainer. Her correspondence from start to finish was timely, professional & considerate.
Our wedding was nice & intimate, with our closest family members & friends joining us. Even with a smaller group (23 people), the album Deanna was able to capture, felt full and abundant. Full of life.
Thank you, Deanna! For being lovely with our many nephews, for capturing our sweetest moments as a new (official) family together, & for providing us with pictures that were beyond what we would have expected.
I absolutely recommend Deanna!”

What is Documentary Wedding Photography Anyway?
Documentary wedding photography is storytelling through imagery, captured with little to no intervention or direction. Often referred to as photojournalistic photography, this approach allows the photographer to blend into the background and observe the day as it naturally unfolds — without interference, stiff posing, or forced moments.
Weddings are especially rich with this kind of beauty: people showing up as their most genuine selves. The laughter, the nerves, the hugs that linger a little longer than expected — these are the moments that can’t be staged. They simply happen.
This is my personal photography style, and a big part of why couples connect with my work. I’m drawn to real interactions and unscripted emotion — the subtle exchanges and in-between seconds that often say the most.
That said, when it comes to formal portraits, I do offer gentle guidance. I’ll pose you in a natural way and give prompts that encourage movement and play, helping those candid, authentic expressions shine through. The goal is never stiffness — it’s to create space where you can feel comfortable enough to simply be yourselves.
