Kaitlan and Marcus’s McLean Mill National Historic Site Wedding: A Personal Celebration of Love and Nature
Kaitlan and Marcus’s McLean Mill National Historic Site wedding was nothing short of magical—a beautifully crafted event that reflected their unique love story. From the very beginning, the couple infused elements of their shared passions and interests, making their special day feel distinctly theirs.
Kaitlan, a nature lover with a deep connection to ecology, was drawn to McLean Mill’s stunning forest setting, which perfectly matched her vision for a nature-inspired wedding. Inside McLean Hall, farm-style tables were adorned with lush succulents, vibrant moss, and even a touch of dirt—creating an earthy, organic feel. And, in true Kaitlan and Marcus fashion, there were dinosaur figurines scattered amongst the moss, adding a playful nod to their shared love of all things prehistoric. It was only fitting that their processional song was the iconic Jurassic Park theme song, setting a whimsical tone for the day.
McLean Mill National Historic Site, where the couple said “I do,” is a 32-acre gem that was once a bustling sawmill and logging operation from the 1920s until the 1960s. Today, the site is a captivating park, with many historic structures still standing as a testament to its past. One of the highlights of the site is its steam-powered sawmill, which remains fully functional and is occasionally showcased during special events. Visitors can also take a stroll through the property and admire the charming collection of 35 buildings, including an old schoolhouse, worker bunkhouses, a blacksmith shop, and even a vintage garage. Along the way, you’ll find old trucks, logging equipment, and rusty jerry cans that add a nostalgic touch to the experience.
What makes McLean Mill even more special is the story of the forest that has regrown naturally over the years. Instead of being replanted, the trees here sprouted from nurse logs—fallen trees that nurture new growth—and today the forest floor is covered in a vibrant carpet of moss and ferns. The tranquil forest trails offer a serene and picturesque setting that perfectly complemented Kaitlan and Marcus’s wedding celebration.

A False First Look
Marcus and Kaitlan chose to see each other privately with a first look prior to the ceremony. I set Marcus up beneath the wooden water tower, surely a most romantic setting. However, the bride would not be the one touching his shoulder from behind! His brother chose to prank him, wearing a white dress and stuffed chest! After the laughs were had, I then relocated Marcus to a setting more suited to the couple- the forest. As Marcus waited patiently on the trail, I was out receiving Katilan. During this time, he heard steps coming up behind him- big clunky steps. He assumed he was being pranked yet again until a voice said, “Ummm, excuse me sir. Can you please move aside for me and my horse?” This turned out to be one the funny highlights from the day for him. Shortly after the incident with the horse, Kaitlan had truly arrived, and he was able to see his real bride.

A Storybook Ceremony
Kaitlan and Marcus’s ceremony was like a story told from a book- oh wait, that’s because it was! They had a friend officiate the wedding ceremony, who read their love story through a picture book he had made especially for them. With colored pictures to boot, this was quite unique and suited the couple well! The setting they chose was perfect for their visions of earthy green- nestled among towering maple, fir and cedar trees.

A Night of Dancing Under the Stars and Delicious Eats
The remainder of the reception was enjoyed in the McLean Hall, outdoor courtyard, and terrace. Dancing under the stars and forest canopy, eating a delicious catered meal and decadent deserts, speeches, and games were enjoyed by all.
