A Power Outage Wedding at Tigh Na Mara
Ashley and Frank did not expect to have a power outage wedding at Tigh Na Mara. Nor did the other 29,000 households in the Nanoose-Qualicum Bay region that day. Many people woke up to snow on the ground, flattening their early gardening efforts (me!), and surprising them with no power. The windy night had knocked down many trees, including one on a major power line which caused a transmission circuit failure affecting a huge region.
At 9:30am Tigh Na Mara guests and staff were without electricity. If the power didn’t come back on by 3:30pm, the kitchen staff would not be able to host dinner for their 20+ guests that evening. Ashley and Frank decided to just roll with it and hope the expected 3pm recovery would be accurate. If not, they planned to order takeout from Nanaimo restaurants to feed their guests. It was stressful for the couple and their guests who were without light or water to shower or get ready in. Propane fireplaces kept the buildings warm, and ample windows allowed natural light to pour in. The bride was moved to the main lobby where a large window allowed adequate daylight in for makeup and hair styling. Dallas of Bride and Beauty was able to work her magic without electricity for the bride and her bridesmaids. They remember the power coming on for just a moment, about 1 minute, which was long enough to give Ashley one little curl in the front. I was photographing the boys at that moment, and captured their enthusiasm and hope as the lights returned for just a brief moment.
The wedding ceremony was held shortly before 3pm, and fortunately the power did return for good by that time! Dinner would be served! Dancing could be had! After the emotional ceremony in the gazebo, family formal photos were taken at the ceremony site. Then the bridal party went back to the cabin for a beverage and rejoice for the power to be back. Photos at the beach after that, and then reception in the beautiful and intimate Carmanah Room. Dinner was served, heartfelt speeches were told, and dancing on the little dance floor was thoroughly enjoyed.
Congratulations to you both on your incredible partnership ♥
